While most customers are able to install SugarChimp directly to their live production instance without issue, some prefer to install it on a test or dev instance prior to going live. Here are some best practices to help you avoid surprises:
Enable Schedulers
SugarChimp relies on CRM scheduled to sync data. In most test environments, those schedulers are turned off by default. If your schedulers are turned off, you will not be able to:
- Send data from your CRM to Mailchimp
- Receive campaign data from Mailchimp into your CRM (Professional plans)
Be sure to turn those schedulers on during SugarChimp testing.
Use a Unique Mailchimp Audience
Unlike your CRM, Mailchimp doesn't offer a test or sandbox mode. So if you're connecting your test CRM to a live Mailchimp audience, there's risk of cross-data population (e.g. causing data to sync from your test CRM to Mailchimp and then over to your live CRM instance.) To avoid syncing test data into your live environment, we recommend:
- Creating a new Mailchimp audience for testing purposes
- Avoiding the use of any audience that is currently connected to your live CRM
- Clearly labeling your test audience (such as "Dev Test Audience") to prevent confusion
If needed, you can check the audiences you currently have setup on your test instance by navigating to SugarChimp's Health Status page.
Check Mailchimp Webhooks
SugarChimp uses web hooks to send certain data, such as campaign activity, back into your CRM. When testing, confirm your web hooks aren't pointing to the wrong environment. To review your web hooks, you can:
- Navigate to your Mailchimp Audience
- Click Settings.
- Click Webhooks. Webhooks with your live CRM instance URL should not appear.
Clean Up When Complete
At the end of testing, we recommend cleaning up your test setup so SugarChimp doesn't continue syncing in the background. You can either:
- Uninstall SugarChimp from your test/dev environment
OR
- Remove syncing for test lists by following the steps below:
- From within your CRM, navigate to the Admin page
- Click Health Status within the SugarChimp section
- For the lists that are syncing at the bottom of the page, click Remove Sync
