One of the most common ways to increase relevance for a subscriber is by personalizing your Mailchimp campaigns. While many marketing teams are already using Mailchimp merge tags to add first names or custom fields from Sugar, this same feature can also be used as part of a sales technique to individualize follow-ups. In this article, we will walk through how to send an email from a specific sales representative and how to include their name in the closing of the campaign.
- From within Mailchimp, create a text merge tag to receive the name of the assigned user. For example, "Assigned Sales Rep First Name" or "Sales Rep Name". Make note of the assigned merge tag, such as *|MERGE7|* (or personalize your own, such as *|ASSIGNED|*).
- Navigate to the Admin page within Sugar.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Field Mapping.
- Using the Audience drop-down, select the name of the audience who you'd like to work with.
- For the new text merge tag you've created, use the drop-down for the appropriate audience, and scroll to the Assigned to User section.
- Select the field you'd like to sync. It is worth noting that you can sync the Assigned User's User Name, their First Name, or Last Name field. This field is the one that will be used in the closing of your individualized campaigns.
- Save and queue a re-sync from Sugar to Mailchimp using the final steps here.
Once fields are set up and synced, you can now build your campaign. Here are the steps to creating a perfect individualized campaign:
- From within Mailchimp, navigate to build a new campaign.
- Within the From section, add the name of the assigned sales rep and their email.

- Click Save and continue designing your campaign.
- Once in the Design step, place your new merge tag in the location where you'd like the assigned user's name to appear, as shown below:

Now you're one step closer to catching the eye of more leads with individualized campaigns from their very own assigned sales reps. Want sales reps to create their own campaigns? Consider granting them access to Mailchimp as either an Author or a Manager.
